The first hour

What you do not have to say

Nothing in the first session is a test. You cannot do it wrong.

  • The whole story

Tell as much or as little as you like. Yolanda will not ask you to start at the beginning.

  • Tears, or none

Cry, or do not. Either way is fine in this room.

  • Notes or a plan

There is nothing to prepare, and no number of sessions to decide on.

  • Your loss, twice

Say it once. You will not be asked to explain it again.

Ways to begin

Three places to start

One-to-one sessions are in Milwaukee or by video. The circle meets in person.

  • An open laptop, a mug and notebooks on a pink sofa beside plants

    After a pregnancy loss

For a miscarriage, a stillbirth or a loss later on. We go at your pace, and nothing has to be explained twice.

    About this service
  • A small stack of balanced stones on a rock in front of a misty waterfall

    Through infertility

For the long middle of treatment: the waiting, the cycles, the decisions. You keep your medical team; Lull is where the rest of it goes.

    A circle for loss

Up to eight people, six Thursday evenings, in a warm room. For anyone who wants to sit with others who understand.

Yolanda Villarreal

Counselor and founder of Lull

Yolanda sees adults after pregnancy loss and during infertility. She keeps her practice small on purpose: one counselor, one room, and time between sessions so no one meets in the waiting room.

Losses that have no ceremony still need somewhere to go. Yolanda's sessions make room for what people were told to move past: the nursery already planned, the due date that keeps arriving, the friend who does not know what to say.

Sessions are for

  • Adults after a pregnancy loss
  • Adults in fertility treatment
  • Partners who want to join some sessions

Credentials

  • Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C), Postpartum Support International

How fees work

The answers to what nearly everyone asks before a first session.

  • Insurance we work with

Lull is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. Lull does not bill Medicare or Medicaid. If you want a counselor who bills your plan, we will gladly give you the names of colleagues.

    • Out of network with insurance plans

    • No Medicare or Medicaid

  • If you pay yourself

You pay at the end of each session by card, including HSA and FSA cards. Your fee is set by the length of the session: 60 minutes for the first session, 50 for an individual session and 90 for each evening of the circle, which you pay for only on the evenings you attend. A partner may join some sessions at the same fee. We send the fee in writing before your first session. A small number of reduced-fee spots are open; ask how to request one. We ask for 24 hours' notice to change an appointment, so the hour can go to someone else.

  • Receipts for reimbursement

Each month we give you an itemized receipt (a superbill) with the dates and kind of session, to send to your plan, which may reimburse part of out-of-network care. It carries a diagnosis code your insurer can see. Your plan decides whether it pays anything, so ask it before you start.

  • An estimate in advance

If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a good faith estimate in writing before care begins. We send one before your first session. If a bill comes to $400 or more above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.

  • Checking your benefits

If you plan to claim reimbursement, ask your plan before the first session whether it covers out-of-network counseling and what it needs from us. Yolanda can tell you what to ask.

  • What the first visit includes

The first session is 60 minutes: time to say as much or as little as you like, and to ask how Yolanda works. It includes the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of counseling. You do not have to decide anything that day.

How we work

Talking, without a timetable

There is no script at Lull and no stage of grief to arrive at.

Sessions are talk therapy. Some people bring a list; some bring nothing. Some days are for the loss itself, and some are for the dinner where someone asked the wrong question.

Yolanda does not tell you to try again, to be grateful for what you have, or that everything happens for a reason. If you want a practical skill, such as a way to get through a due date or a holiday, she will teach one. If you only want to be heard, she will do that.

Grief that is never named still takes up the room.

The people around you may not know what to say either. We keep a page of words you can borrow.

Questions

What nearly everyone asks

Do you take my insurance?

Lull is out of network with insurance plans, so you pay for each session yourself. Each month we give you an itemized receipt you can send to your plan, which may reimburse part of it. Lull does not bill Medicare or Medicaid.

What happens in the first session?

Sixty minutes in which you say what you want to say. Yolanda explains how she works, the limits of confidentiality and the possible risks and benefits of counseling, and you decide whether it suits you.

How often do we meet?

You and Yolanda set the pace together, and you can change it. Some people come weekly for a while, others every few weeks around a hard date.

Can my partner come?

Yes, for some sessions or all of them, at the same fee. The page for partners and family explains how.

Do you see people by video?

Yes, while you are in Wisconsin. Yolanda is licensed here and cannot see someone who is outside the state during a session.

What if I am in crisis?

Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. Lull is not monitored around the clock.
